Hattendo (八天堂 bā tiān táng), or 8th Heaven, is a new Japanese cream filled cake that has just arrived from Japan.

Be aware, it is highly popular! We arrived there at 2pm, and by that time 5 of the other fillings had already sold out! There were only the chocolate and the cream left. So, unfortunately, we went back the day after to pick up the other cakes.

1. Cream 奶油 nǎi yóu  - $80 ($120 inc ice cream)
2. Chocolate 巧克力 qiǎo kè lì - $80 ($120 inc ice cream)
3. Custard 卡斯特 kǎ sī tè $80
4. Chestnut 栗子 lì zi - $80
5. Mango 芒果 mǎng guǒ - $80
6. Matcha 抹茶 mǒ chá - $80 *Didn't review*
7. Red bean 紅豆 hóng dòu - $80  *Didn't review*

1. Cream 奶油 nǎi yóu - $80 ($120 inc ice cream)

Each bun is made of the same cake/bun mixture. It kind of resembles the hybrid of a cake - bread mix. It is sweet, soft, delicate and quite nice.

The cream filling is pleasant, but just cream.

The addition of the ice cream is possibly the best thing about this: sour, good flavour of milk, fantastically dense texture whilst remaining creamy.

2. Chocolate 巧克力 qiǎo kè lì - $80 ($120 inc ice cream)

I am somewhat of a chocolate fiend, but this was somewhat of a disappointment: I wanted the chocolate to be a dark chocolate, but this was just a milk chocolate, unfortunately. The chocolate flavour was weak. With the cake having a fairly sweet flavour, the filling would probably benefit from being stronger in flavour.

3. Custard 卡斯特 kǎ sī tè $80   4. Chestnut 栗子 lì zi - $80   5. Mango 芒果 mǎng guǒ - $80

We were very unfortunate to not have tried the Matcha or the Red bean flavours, but here we have 1 Mango, 1 Chestnut, 1 Custard and 2 Cream flavours.

3. Custard 卡斯特 kǎ sī tè $80

We didn't take pictures of the inside, but I can say that the custard looked a lot like the cream in colour, and it was similarly weak in flavour. See a pattern here?

4. Chestnut 栗子 lì zi - $80

The chestnut flavour resembled the chocolate in colour, but had a much better flavour - surprise! It was slightly stronger in flavour than the others, but still lacked that extra something. Chestnut is not a regularly eaten flavour, for me, so this was quite a nice change.

There was an earthy flavour to the chestnut, with a nice nutty flavour, too. It was, however, a little too sweet.

 5. Mango 芒果 mǎng guǒ - $80

A fake mango flavour is not a particularly enjoyable experience. However, a real mango flavour imparted into cream and retaining its strong flavour is wonderful. Unfortunately, this was the former of the two...

Best dish: 4. Chestnut 栗子 lì zi - $80

Dish I wouldn't order again:  1, 2, 3, 5.

Overall, I was hugely unimpressed by what this had to offer. Instagram and Facebook had been going crazy about this place and the fact that they sell out (usually, but not always) by mid-day every day. It is way too expensive, especially for what it is. If this was my shop, I feel that $40 is a good price, but $80 is a disgustingly high price to put on these absolutely average cake/buns. I won't be returning.
