Taipei City - 霸味薑母鴨 (木新店) - Ginger Duck, MuXin branch

As we were in MaoKong over the long weekend of 2/28 and getting cold, we decided to go and get some ginger duck to warm us up.



This chain ginger duck restaurant has branches everywhere, so we were just hoping it would be as good as what I hear the original store in SanChong is.








The pot you can see to the side of the massive pan with ginger in it, is one of the pots they serve up at your table.




What we ordered:



As we had ordered the Duck in ginger broth - 薑母鴨 jiāng mǔ yā (small pot $280), the coals were served and put on our table before the pot arrived.


Before the broth arrived, we were served up with our rice noodles 麵線 miàn xiàn. They were alright. They weren't about to change the way I think about Taiwanese food, but they provided the necessary carbohydrates for my meal.



The Duck intestines 鴨腸 yā cháng arrived cold, ready to be plunged into the molten ginger soup when it arrived. 



As the soup arrived, we prepared ourselves with two sauces provided for the table: The lighter coloured one is this salty sauce with no particular over-riding flavour. At first, I didn't particularly like it, but it grew on me as the meal progressed. It was fine, but I don't think necessary.


The other was just a spicy soy sauce, which I actually enjoyed more.







Packed full of duck, duck blood 鴨血, tofu skin 豆皮, frozen bean curd凍豆腐, hand made fish dumplings 手工魚餃 and duck meatballs 鴨肉丸, this soup was bursting with ingredients and aroma.



It seemed like every time the spoon came up, you could fish out something different.



The duck intestines went down to almost nothing if left too long. Not known for their flavour, particularly, but more for the slightly chewy texture.


We counted no more than 6 pieces of meat inside the pot, so it's a good job we had plenty of other things from the menu to eat. The meat itself was quite chewy, and not particularly flavourful. It had clearly been bubbling away for a while, otherwise it should have just fallen off the bone...



This is something I just cannot get used to in Taiwan. I know some people love chicken feet, so I presume duck feet are the same? However, the scales on the skin and the webbed feet on this duck foot was enough to make me shudder to look at it. And, really, it has no meat on it. If you are a regular foot eater, I'd love to know your thoughts on why you eat these things.



After we had only a little broth left and no more edible morsels to choose from, the pot was removed and the burning embers remained.


I have heard that the original store in SanChong is very good, so maybe I will try that next time. I feel that the chain stores can sometimes let standards slip and I don't want to decide that the SanChong one will be different, but I hope it will. 


Really, I expect the broth to have a deeper ginger flavour, I expect the meat to be cooked slower and for longer, and I expect there to be more meat. Afterall, it is called ginger DUCK.

Taipei City - 天恩至德素食糕餅 MaoKong Steamed bread and gift shop

You just have to love MaoKong 貓空 in the WenShan District 文山區 in Taipei near the zoo. In summer, it's definitely one of my favourite places to take a ride up to...



(this is not me)


Driving past the MRT station in MaoKong and continuing on ZhiNan Road 指南路 you'll eventually come to this lovely temple (shame about the car parked in front ruining the nice view).


And, next door to this temple, is this wonderful place - admittedly, it doesn't look it.

Perfect gift: some home made soap shaped like Taiwan.


They have some really weird scented soaps, this one is sponge cucumber!

Anybody like dried, sour plums? I hated them when I first arrived here as they are incredibly sour. But, with a cup of oolong tea, they're the perfect accompaniment.


These are also delicious, but quite sweet! They're olives, believe it or not

This traditional Japanese dessert/snack is called mochi 麻糬



I am a big fan of these, they go down wonderfully with a cup of Taiwanese Oolong tea. Japanese style slightly sweetened jelly, this flavour is 紅豆 hóng dòu Red Bean.

Taipei City - 光羽塩 LyTea

Rent a scooter for the afternoon and scoot up to MaoKong from the Zoo, but make sure to stop here along the way.






That's not a bad view, agreed?


And the menu is also in English, too.




I've had the tea here, before. It is good, and certainly worth doing if you're only in Taipei for a short time, as the tea ceremony is something to truly enjoy and savour. Check out this tea video on youtube for more information (this is not my video, I just share it as an example of what I believe to be a good example of a Chinese tea ceremony).




1. 鐵觀音拿鐵 TieGuanYin (Iron Buddha) Latte $230


We went for the Iron Buddha, or TieGuanYin tea. This is a tea known to be grown in the MuZha area of Taipei, where MaoKong is situated. This tea isn't brewed in the special way in which the others are, however, it is still adequate for your tea fix. It can be a little sweet, if your latte is made using the standard amount (over the top amount) of sugar that a lot of the Taiwanese enjoy. So, be sure to get either 微糖  Less Sugar (wēi táng) or 無糖 No Sugar (wú táng).

This is one of the reasons why this place got a 6/10 for cleanliness. Don't serve anyone a broken anything: be it a bowl, plate, cup or glass. How are we to know whether it was broken during the dishing up process, cleaning process or some other time? I fished around at the bottom, first, until I could be sure that there was no shards inside the dish - fortunately, there wasn't. 

As for the taste: it was really quite nice. The crab roe made the soup broth quite thick and tasty. There wasn't an overpowering crab flavour I thought there could have been upon seeing the colour of the fish. However, the flavour was mild and pleasant. The tofu had a softness inside with a nice resistant skin on the outside. It's pretty good, actually!

Another reason why this place only receives a 6/10 for cleanliness, check out the top of the bowl: Poor form.

Tea leaves serve as a good addition to a light oil for these noodles to be cooked in for a brief moment. They are served with a little extra oil over the top with garlic and roasted onions. They're quite good, but they are also a little soggy. I've had better tea oil noodles from the other side of the MaoKong valley (yet to blog, though).

Overall, this place is certainly less visited than other more popular spots at the top of MaoKong. It would only be 10-15mins walk from the top, too! Take a stroll on a nice day and get a good view of the Taipei basin in all its glory.
