Taipei City - 博多拉麵 Ramen noodle

Value for money: 8/10
Cleanliness: 8/10
Service: 7/10
Quality of food: 8/10
Overall: 7/10

Very rarely do I find myself not wanting to eat Japanese Ramen Noodles. This was one of those days where the smells wafting outside just drew me in.

This chain store has 5 stores throughout Taipei: FuXing South Road, BanQiaoNeiHu, Civic Blvd 1 and Civic Blvd 2

The inside is modest and my only criticism is that I think the tables are too close together, to the point where you're almost touching elbows with the table next to you.

I wrote on the menu, to help you a bit. You can choose from a pork, curry, miso or plain soup base. You can also choose your meats: 炸雞 chicken, 叉燒 Cantonese pork, 玉米海帶芽 corn and seaweed, 肉排 pork chop.

1. 肉排咖哩 ròu pái kā lī Pork chop with curry soup
2. 炸雞博多 zhā jí bó duō Fried Chicken in the house special soup
3. 起司可樂餅 qǐ sī kě lè bǐng Deep fried cheese and potato cake

Top dish is the house special soup and the bottom is the curry

1. 肉排咖哩 ròu pái kā lī Pork chop with curry soup

I like Japanese curry, I like ramen noodles, so why not try when both mixed together?

The pork chop was tender and tasty and the curry was mildly spiced with a nice rich flavour. I am unsure why, but I didn't have much of an expectation of this place, it certainly delivers on flavour at a reasonable price for a big bowl of steaming ramen.

The noodles themselves are also fairly good and plentiful.

To keep it warm, it's placed atop this burner which will eventually burn out. In fact, due to the fact that it is raised up, it is at a comfortable height to eat at without bending down - as a tall guy, I am a fan of this!

2. 炸雞博多 zhā jí bó duō Fried Chicken in the house special soup

Apologies for the quality...

I also liked this soup base, but I prefer the curry. In fact, if I ordered the curry with this chicken then I'd be a very happy man, indeed! The chicken here is delicious: tender, juicy, plentiful, tasty. Order the chicken, with the curry soup and I am sure you won't be disappointed.

3. 起司可樂餅 qǐ sī kě lè bǐng Deep fried cheese and potato cake

I probably wouldn't order this again. I have had much better deep fried cheese and potato cakes for around the same price. It was crunchy on the outside but there wasn't enough cheese to really make it special or memorable enough.

I think in Eastern Area, this isn't bad for 2 people eating Ramen Noodles

Overall, I would recommend this place and recommend getting the chicken with the curry soup base.

Taipei City - 林東芳牛肉麵 Lin Dong Fang Beef Noodles

Instagram

Value for money: 9/10
Cleanliness: 6/10
Service: 9/10
Quality of food: 10/10
Overall: 8/10

I am shocked and appauled in myself that I have only posted about 1 beef noodle restaurant before. My sincere apologies.

Whilst the line looks long, we only waited around 15-20mins.

It's not winning any awards for cleanliness, but it still does incredible trade. And I am of the belief that we should all eat in a shed at least once (more, after you've tasted this delight) in your life.

Big pots of loveliness!

The meat stews in here for hours upon hours, giving it depth of flavour and turning the fat into deliciously, silky smooth beefiness that melts in your mouth.

The noodles are cooked altogether in a huge pot, but it's weird how they seem to be cooked so well, considering they're cooked altogether in this way...

Take your pick of small plates, each for $40. Top to bottom: small fish with peanuts, pickled cabbage, seaweed, pigs skin, cucumber, tofu, greens, beansprouts.

We went for seaweed 海帶 hǎi dài , greens 青菜 qīng cài  (take them yourself from the tray) and also a bowl of the 花干 huā gān ($40) which is the house special tofu. Each side dish was great, and the 花干 is an absolute must order

牛肉麵 niú ròu miàn (小碗) xiǎo wǎn  Beef noodles (small bowl) $150

This is the small bowl, well, I don't know if I could have even managed the big bowl. I am more into ordering a couple of sides and tasting a few of the dishes, rather than simply gorging on one dish.

This is, by a long way, the best beef noodle soup I have ever had. It simply ticks all the boxes:
- Strong beef broth
- Fresh tasting ingredients
- Plentiful amount of beef
- Excellently cooked noodles
- Great portion size
- Very good value for money (especially in comparison to others of the same price who provide less meat and a less flavourful broth)

I cannot recommend it enough. The depth of flavour from the broth is awesome and the beef itself is left fairly thick and in plentiful amounts (4 slices) so you can almost have a mouthful with each bite.

The noodles retain a bite to them and the green onions burst and pop with fresh flavour. No wonder we had to wait!

I can assure you that if you want to impress Taiwanese friends or relatives, then taking them here to eat will definitely see you remain in their good books for a while.

Make sure you try the beef noodles first, but if you're in the mood for something spicy then this beef dripping (the run offs of the beef juices) with chilli is set to light up your taste buds. It's spicy and adds a heavier beef flavour to your broth.

I can safely say that if you go to any Beef noodle restaurant, then you will either pay exactly the same as this or, more likely, a little more. However, with this place, you get to taste a long tradition of beef noodle soup that has been developed over decades, with a unique atmosphere and fantastically well rounded dishes.

Overall, I can safely say that this is my favourite Beef noodle joint in Taipei. If you have any others you think could challenge this, then please do let me know, as I do love my Beef noodles!
