Taipei City - 紅通通 Hong Tong Tong

Instagram

Value for money: 9/10
Cleanliness: 8/10
Service: 9/10
Quality of food: 9/10
Overall: 9/10

Located behind ZhongXiao East road near Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall and ZhongXiao DunHua station, you can explore the streets of plentiful restaurants. We booked in to go here, on a recommendation.

Inside is fairly basic, but roomy and comfortable.

This may seem expensive, but let me assure you that if you order any of these, that you will be more than full! You could quite easily order 1 between 3-4 people. But, we were hungry, so we ordered 1 between the 2 of us.

Korean restaurants love to offer up free small dishes to accompany your meal. My pick are the beansprouts (bottom left), spicy tofu (bottom right) and the pickled Daikon radish (middle). But the kimchi is also good, and the sweet potato salad isn't bad, either.

What we ordered:

紅通通春川辣雞 hóng tōng tōng chūn chuān là jī
House special spicy one pot (including Fried Rice)
$649

We have onion, sweet potato, carrot, radish, topoki, cabbage, spicy sauce, kimchi, pak choi and also tofu strips.

These side dishes were delicious.

This was all cooked at the table by the staff, ideal!

A little was seperated and kept to one side to be added into the fried rice (which will come later). We used the lettuce leaves (from the table which also has the small plates) as a bowl for this wonderful meat, topoki and vegetable concoction. The lettuce is fresh and crunchy, and cuts through the grease of the dish above (albeit very little grease).

After we finished the main dish, they asked us if we wanted to eat the rice.

We got some cheese with our rice, too! I strongly recommend this: 起司絲 qǐ sī sī $60 (I think).

This was a nice touch - creating the heart shape out of the fried rice. It took a lot of (the staff) patting it down and shaping it into the heart. But, I think it's a pretty decent effort.

The cheese melted in nicely, who doesn't love melted cheese?

Because the cheese was patted down and left for a little while, a crunchy and almost caramelised flavour and texture resulted - yes yes yes!

I am a big fan of crunchy rice.

Overall, this place certainly comes with a solid recommendation from myself. I think the food was of good quality, cooked well, presented well and it was, overall, pretty decent value for money.
